I get a lot of emails from many readers, asking how to get rid of acne? I am not qualified to give out a certified treatment but, I am going to share today, what worked for me. It’s been around 1 year now, and I have not gotten any major skin breakout. From the last 6 months, there had not been even a single zit on my face. It’s a major breakthrough for someone who has suffered from Acne for about 15 long years.
Special Note: Please do not get overwhelmed by all the products/methods I have listed below. You can choose one product and go ahead. All you need is clean pores.
How To Get Rid Of Acne?
Here are a few things that you could do. You do not need to follow all these steps.
- Deep Clean Your Pores Using Glycolic Acid
- Use Acids In Your Regimen as in Toner/ Lotion
- Wear Physical Sunscreen That Contains Zinc Oxide/ Titanium Oxide
- Use Vitamin C to fight inflammation/scars.
- Stay Consistent and positive
- Love your skin every day.
Let’s get into more detail.
How Acne is Formed?
My oily skin has the capacity to produce an enormous amount of oil. This oil fills up my facial pores. Also, the grime and dirt along with nanoparticles from pollution, settles into these oil-filled pores, developing a feeding ground for acne-genic bacteria. On oily skin, you will notice:
- Whiteheads: Skin produces sebum, oily skin produces, extra sebum. This sebum along with dirt and pollution gets accumulated in the minute hair follicles of your skin. Causing white substance to show up on the skin’s surface. These are whiteheads.
- Blackheads: When these whiteheads gets oxidized by coming in contact with the environment, they turn into blackheads.
- Pimples/Acne: When the blackheads/whiteheads become infectious (which happens pretty fast), you see big boils on your skin known as pimples.
How To Deep Clean Pores? How To Unclog Clogged Pores?
In order to get rid of acne, whiteheads, blackheads, you need to clean your pores. But do’t run to grab a physical scrub, as they can’t really deep clean your pores.
Use a chemical exfolliant. Don’t panic when I say Chemical. Not all chemicals are harsh. Acne prone skin can use little magic of Alpha Hydroxy Acids/ Beta Hydroxy Acids, while you won’t even feel anything.
These acids can penetrate deeper in your skin and get rid of all the gunk your pores are accumulating. Regular use of cleansers having AHA or BHA or both, can keep pores clean.
Use AHA/BHA Facial Wash
I use a Glycolic and Salicylic acid based face wash at night. I try to keep it on my face for 1-2 minutes so that it could work effectively. Later I rinse it with tap water.
During the morning I use Pond’s Pure White Anti Pollution Face Wash. It kind of visibly removes gunk as I rinse this face wash. I feel it’s the dead skin cells + dirt coming out of my skin. My skin feels really clean afterwords.
Use A Toner Containing Exfoliating Acid
Using a toner is important for oily skin to keep pores minimized. But normal toners never worked for me, I either use a Glycolic acid toner or a Mandelic acid toner. I use toner twice every day. Mostly it’s the Mandelic acid toner, but during my PMS period, I use the Glycolic acid toner more since my skin starts producing more oil.
Note: If you are using Glycolic Acid(AHA) based face wash, you can use a milder toner.
Non-Comdeogenic Light Moisturizer
A moisturizer is a must be it any skin type. Even my oily skin needs a bit of moisture after gulping down AHA and BHA. I use Suganda White Lotus moisturizer or Neutrogena Oil-Free moisturizer. Your moisturizer should not be clogging your pores. I make sure not to use a moisturizer that has SPF. A moisturizer with SPF always blocks my pores. I use a high SPF sunscreen on top of moisturizer.
Vitamin C Serum
For night time, I use a Vitamin C serum. It has many benefits, such as helps to fight active pimples, reduces inflammation, fades away dark spots and hyper pigmentation. Vitamin C is great for anti oxidant properties also.
It works fast. My favorite is O3+ Agelock Vitamin C Booster Serum. It’s’ lightweight and fast absorbing. Always gives nice results.
Non Comdeogenic Sunscreen
I prefer physical sunscreen because a physical sunscreen contains Zinc Oxide and Titanium Oxide. These minerals help to heal acne faster. Also, there are very minimal chances of a physical sunscreen to get absorbed into your bloodstream. Chemical sunscreens anyway make me feel sweaty. I use a sunscreen that offers at least SPF 50. LA Shield FISICO Gel Sunscreen SPF 50 is a nice choice.

How To Get Rid Of Acne With Home Treatment?
It is easier said than done. Since physical exfoliation has been ruled out to protect the skin, you need to find the ingredients in your kitchen that contain Glycolic Acid to exfoliate the skin.
Glycolic Acid is derived from Sugar cane. In order to have the same exfoliating effect, crush some sugar cane, add a spoon of lemon juice to form a paste. Patch test before you apply it to your skin. Apply this paste for few minutes.
Few More Skin Care Products For Oily Acne Prone Skin
The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% and Zinc 1%
This is one product that can really help you get rid of acne. How? It contains Niacinamide and Zinc. These two active ingredients fight acne and keep sebum production under control. If sebum production is controlled, your pores stay clean and acne-free. It’s that simple.
This solution is odor-free, colorless, and runny liquid. I am on my second bottle of this solution. It has made my skin balanced in terms of producing oil. Also, it helps with blemishes.
Mamaearth Overnight Radiance Night Cream
It’s my current favorite night cream. I recently bought the second bottle of this night cream. It certainly adds glow to my face the next morning. It does not clog pores or feel heavy on my oily skin. Suitable for summer nights too.
Sandalwood Powder for Brighter & Clearer Skin
I have quit using ready-made clay masks, rather my skin seems to be happy with Sandalwood powder mixed with rose water. I use it once or twice every week. It helps to fade away scars and tanning.
I will again say, in order to get rid of acne, you need to keep your pores clean. So from the above mentioned products, choose whatever you think is doable for you. Stay consistent. You need 2-4 weeks to see actual reduction in acne. Try to finish the product that you started.

The most commonly used question, how to get rid of acne, has one simple answer – keep your pores clean. Don’t let oil and dirt sit in your pores. Be gentle and persistent.
Hope this article could help those who are suffering from acne. I have suffered for so many years, I wish I had gotten a hold of AHA/BHA earlier. I would have been in more photographs 🙂

Hi Nisha,
This is going to be one very useful people for chronic acne-sufferers. Reading your experience, I relate it to my sibling’s struggle with acne, growing up. She started breaking out during 13-14 too and had a bad, long journey with acne trying all sort of stuff that you mentioned – packs, scrubs, even toothpaste – and crazy ideas like that. Fortunately, she stopped breaking out now (maybe her hormones are more balanced now) and she always uses a salicylic face wash. She claims it helps her. So I very much agree with you on the point where you recommend chemical exfoliators. Not all are bad.
I have not had acne much but I get breakouts from time to time. Not breaking out for 3 months should feel awesome. Ain’t it? I’ll definitely incorporate your ideas into my routine! I’m looking forward to my zero-breakout months too!
Thanks for the detailed article! <3

Hey Lancy,
Great to have you back.
Natural skin care is wonderful, but it never helped me with my skin condition.
AHA & BHA are highly beneficial for acne prone skin. I would advice to give these acids a try if acne keeps on coming back.
See you around.
Love.
