“I have nothing to wear”, women are heard saying this, standing in front of their wardrobes. Whenever there is a special occasion, they seem so distressed and confused. Even if her closet is overflowing with costly Sarees and designer suits, she hopes something unique, out of this world, would appear in her closet by itself.
Why do we face this, nothing-to-wear situation so seldom? Let me tell you. Actually, we are bored of those regular Silk Sarees, those palazzo suits, and crop top -skirt. Ain’t you? I am, quite frankly. So this wedding season, I reached out to an Assamese Saree, a Mekhela Chador.
What is a Mekhela Chador?
And Assamesse Saree is known as a Mekhela Chador or a Mekhela Chadar. It’s a two-piece outfit. One, known as Mekhela, is draped as a skirt over an underskirt(petticoat) while the other one, Chador, is tucked from one end at your waist and used as a pallu covering your chest and even your head if you want to. Basically it is kind of a regular saree but with a twist. You can use this two-piece saree as a lehenga-dupatta also.
Mekhela Chador is a beautiful traditional outfit and available in various fabrics such as Silk, Artificial Silk, Chanderi, Organza, Cotton, Linen, etc. I found beautiful regular wear and wedding specials at Chadorkart. The website hosts a verity of Assamese Sarees and at very reasonable prices.

How To Choose An Assamese Saree For You?
When you are going to try something new, you need to make sure you choose the fabric and style that is easy to wear and manage.
- The fabric should suit the season
- The fabric and the work/style should match the occasion
- You should be comfortable wearing the style
- The blouse should amplify the beauty of the Saree
Since I wanted to try out a wedding outfit, I simply chose a coral-colored chiffon set of Mekhela Chador. The beautiful cutwork amplifies its beauty and classiness. The fabric is Chiffon, so, It’s super manageable to wear and flaunt the Saree. It’s winter so there are no issues with perspiration, hence the heavy embroidery blouse that comes with the set is a perfect fit
Above all, the set could be easily used as lehenga and dupatta have given the beautiful work on the blouse. It’s kind of a multi-use product for me.
How To Wear A Mekhela Chador Like A Pro?
It’s actually super easy to wear a Mekhela Chador. The process is the same as you wear regular Saree.
- Wear an underskirt and the blouse that comes with the saree.
- Wear the Mekhela part as a skirt and make 2-3 pleats as you could comfortably.
- Tuck the pleats in.
- Tuck in the Chador part at your waist and drape it over your chest as you do for a regular saree.
- Smile and appreciate yourself.
Why You Should Try An Assamese Saree
We love in a country with a diverse culture. Every state has a traditional outfit and there is no harm in trying out something different every now and then. Assamese Saree is almost like a regular saree just with a little and beautiful twist. It can be worn in the traditional way or you can use your own crop tops and modern sequined blouse and really glam up your look. You can wear it like a lehenga also.
Why not support and promote the beautiful culture that Assam holds?
What do I like the most about my Assamesse Saree?
-
Firstly, I fell for the color instantly. This is my most favorite color when it comes to choosing traditional outfits for weddings and parties.
- The fabric of this saree is good. The skirt, Mekhela, is made of free-flowing Chiffon, while the Chador comes in supernet.
- The cutwork on the chador and mekhela is mind-blowing.
- I can style it in many ways, like a traditional Saree, Saree-Cum-Lehenga, Lehenga-Dupatta, Crop top & Skirt. Even the Chador, could be paired up with other outfits.
- The blouse is beautiful. I love the elegant work.
- It’s very reasonable.
This wedding season, shop for something unique, something you have never worn or dreamed about wearing. A traditional Assamesse outfit, a Mekhela Chador. If you like to experiment with your looks, you can style it in various ways, otherwise you can wear it like a traditional Saree. It’s a win-win.
I hope you liked the concept of trying out an outfit from the other state. When we can adore Indo-Western outfits, we should also appreciate inter state outfits, especially when they are so beautiful. Don’t you agree?
