Today I am up with my recipe for Homemade DIY BB cream. I used to make this DIY BB cream in my college days when I had to bind myself within stipulated pocket-money. Since then I have come a long way but this DIY somehow stayed with me. BB cream was a new inclusion to beauty routines then and everyone was craving for their share of experience of this novelty.
Over the years, I have perfected the recipe for DIY BB cream at home. I modified it to suit my skin’s needs. For example, during winters, I used to add more moisturizer while during summer, I would keep the quantity of moisturizer minimum. Similarly, I can decide whether I want my BB cream to be sheer or should offer nice coverage.
I use only 6 essential ingredients that work for almost everyone. Here we go with the DIY BB cream.
DIY BB Cream Ingredients
1 Lotion Based Facial Moisturizer (Preferably Mattifying)
2 Gel Based Facial Moisturizer
This BB cream stands on the base of two main ingredients; a lotion-based moisturizer and a gel-based moisturizer. The proportions of these two ingredients decide the texture of our BB cream. If you have oily skin type then you should take 2 parts of gel moisturizer and 1 part of the lotion one. On the other hand, the dry skin beauties should take 2 parts of lotion moisturizer and 1 part of gel-based skin nourisher. Since I have oily-combination skin, I will stick to the earlier ratio which is suitable for my skin type.
3 Sunscreen with more than Preferable SPF
According to your sun exposure, the SPF and PA ratings of your sunscreen need to be decided. For store-bought BB creams it is not possible to adjust it so we need to add another layer of sunscreen some times. For this BB cream, this problem is completely non-existent as we can add sunscreen as per our choice. I have sun-sensitive skin so, I like my BB cream to have broad-spectrum protection. Here, I am adding an SPF 50 & PA+++ sunscreen to my BB cream but you can add anything you like.
I would suggest picking a high SPF because it is getting diluted with other products. In case you can pick powder with SPF, it would be great too.
4 Lacto Calamine (Optional)
Lacto calamine has a little bit of pink tint plus glycerin. The pink tint does not suit me, but if you want a pinkish glow, then Lacto Calamine is a great option. Glycerin content provides some slip and priming effects to the BB cream.
5 Foundation Matching Your Skintone:
This ingredient is totally optional. If you want a lightweight BB cream then skip this one. Since I want a bit more coverage to blur my acne marks to some extent I use foundation. I have 1-2 foundations that have not worked for me. I often put them in my DIY BB cream to finish them off.
6 Tinted Loose Powder
This last item is to provide the necessary coverage (if you are not using foundation) and control the consistency of my BB cream. I have Lakme’s Rose Powder which I am using today. If you do not have such a loose powder you can scrape off some powder from your pressed powder pan. If the foundation you using is darker than your skin, then it is best to use a non-tinted setting powder.
How to Make BB Cream At Home
According to the above-mentioned instructions decide the proportions of each item as per your skin type first. Then follow the steps.
- Take the Lotion Based Moisturizer in a bowl.
- Add the Gel Based Moisturizer in it and mix well.
- Add a bit of Sunscreen in the mixture and give it a stir.
- (optional) Now is the time to add Lacto Calamine and mixing again to blend each item minutely.
- In this step, I am adding the foundation drop by drop and mixing until I reach my preferred tint but you are free to skip this step.
- Finally, add some loose powder, blend, and store in an air-tight container.
How to Use Homemade BB Cream?
Cleanse and tone the face as usual and then apply this BB cream with fingers or foundation sponge. For more coverage, use a flat foundation brush. It is best to use the cream within 2-3 weeks else the ingredients might de-generate and the effects will be hampered.
Bonus Tips
- It is possible to make a DIY face primer by increasing the amount of glycerine/Lacto Calamine and lessening other tinted products.
- Instead of gel moisturizer, aloe vera gel can also be used.
Editor’s Note
Why would you want to make a BB cream, while you can buy them at the store? Homemade BB cream can be customized while the store-bought can’t be. I have used numerous BB /CC Creams but everyone has at least one con. Some lack of moisture, some lack of pigment while some lack of sun protection.
When you make your own BB cream know what to put in it to make your ideal BB/CC Cream. You can control its consistency, color, smell & everything else. You can make your BB cream according to your shade. How cool is that?
Does Homemade BB Cream Provide Enough Sun Protection?
To be honest, BB cream is always a makeup product, even store-bought BB creams cannot provide you enough sun protection. I would suggest you wear a separate sunscreen if you are going out and spending a great deal of time under the sun. You must not rely on the sun protection provided by your BB or any other makeup product. If you want to know more about sun protection, you must read this article.
