A complete guide to selecting a perfect lipstick

Lipstick is a girl’s saviour in all kinds of situations. Imagine walking around your favourite makeup store or browsing through a famous website and glancing at the sea of options in lipsticks! But still, you are unable to pick a shade for you because you are confused as to which one would suit you the best. In such a situation, guidance like such comes very handily. Well, just to ensure that you find ease at picking the perfect shade that enhances your personality even more.

Know your skin’s undertone

If you are on a quest to pick the most suitable lipstick for yourself, try finding your skin’s undertone first. It gives you a perfect idea of the lipstick shades to own. The easiest way to find out your skin’s undertone is by checking the colour of the veins on the inner side of your wrists. If they look blue, they have a cool or pink undertone, whereas if they appear green, they have a warm or yellow undertone.

Congratulations if you can’t decide if they’re blue or green and look to be a combination of both. You have a neutral undertone to your skin. Now pick the shades as per the undertones. For example, warm undertones look great with peach, pink and red shades, while cooler ones tend to get better with red and maroon.

Shades according to your natural lip colour

Consider your lips natural color while choosing a lipstick

Look for a colour that is similar to your natural colour but a notch darker when picking a lipstick that will work for you. If your lips are pale, a beige, sandy, or pale pink lipstick might be appropriate. Browns and roses are suitable for medium-toned lips, while raisin is appropriate for dark-toned lips. Choose chocolate and blackberry colours if your lips are really dark and purple or dark brown.

Bring your daylight colour to a greater intensity for the evening. A satiny burgundy might appear more striking at night if you choose a berry lip gloss during the day.

Match with your skin tone

Your skin tone is another aspect that might make your lipstick seems good or bad. A white-skinned lady looks charming wearing orangey-brown lipstick, just as a blush pink kills olive skin. The optimal lipstick colour is determined by the warmth or coolness of a person’s skin tone (rather than their skin colour). Warm skin will have yellow undertones and maybe a hint of orange. Cool skin has pink undertones with red undertones.

If you can, test a new lipstick on your lips to see its natural colour and how it looks on your skin (use a cotton bud). Alternatively, because the pads of your fingertips are closer to lip colour than the side of your hand, test it on the pads of your fingertips instead of the side of your hand. It will also reveal the lipstick’s texture, such as whether it’s very sheer, completely matte, sparkly, and so on. On the other hand, a matte finish tends to make lips appear thinner and ageing, whilst shimmering hues and glosses make lips appear larger.
